I returned from a weekend offline to find myself hit by requests—and demands—to comment on episode 7, so I’m going to take advantage of your question here to address it. Please note that my comments are spoiler-free for those who didn’t see Saturday’s episode. Also, I’m using this question to formulate a general response to all the requests for comment, rather than specifically responding to this one. This is also my comment on all changes, so I won’t be replying to further requests based on future episodes. This is one-size-fits-all :)
So, what did I think after episode 7? I haven’t seen it—or any of the episodes. I still write in that world, and can’t risk being influenced by another writer’s version of it, and after what I heard about the latest episode perhaps readers will start to better understand why I felt I had to take that stance to protect my future stories.
I have heard enough to know what’s happening. I can’t comment on how I feel about how they’re handling the show, because how I feel isn’t important. I sold the option because the number one question I get is “when will your books be a movie/TV show?” When I had the chance to provide that for readers, I couldn’t refuse. So it’s not about how I feel about the changes, but how readers feel. Right now, some are deeply unhappy with me, and that’s…tough to deal with. Anyone who knows me knows how important my readers’ opinions are to me. Readers gave me this amazing career and I owe them more than I can repay.
It also been very hard for me to hear from readers who feel betrayed because they think I was actively involved the show or that I approved these changes. As I’ve said, I read very early versions of the first 2 scripts. That was the entirety of my role in the production.
An author cannot have creative control over a film project based on her books. She can give input, but from what I heard from others writers, it’s usually an exercise in frustration and futility. I decided, then, that if I trust the people undertaking this project, then I need to fully trust them. Which is what I did.
I knew would be changes and I’ve warned readers of that. I was told, though, the show would stick close to book 1. Readers tell me that started out true, but by mid-season is no longer the case. Bitten was my first book, written 15 years ago. I know it’s flawed. I guess the extensive changes mean the writers are trying to do their best with the source material.
Readers can expect that the show will continue to deviate significantly from the book until it goes off on its own story. I know they’re sticking to the werewolves (no other supernaturals) and Bitten is the only all-werewolf full-length book I wrote. If it goes to season 2, it’ll be their own plot. This would be the beginning of that shift.
I’m sorry that some readers are upset with me over these changes. I undertook selling the option as an experiment, a decision that I’m sure I’ll be deeply re-evaluating. In the meantime, I’m trying to keep my focus on my own stories. I’m still writing in this world—Brazen came out in Dec, Bounty Hunt later this year, Forsaken early next year—and that will be unaffected by any changes from the TV show. And I’m writing in new worlds, too: Cainsville, Age of Legends, Blackwell Pages.
If readers want me to keep my focus on my writing and telling new stories—rather than having to deal with what I can’t control—they can comment on my books and ask me about those instead of the show. Even if you love the show, that’s great, but I’m not the person to tell, because I have nothing to do with it. Talk to me about my books, and you’ll make me a very happy and motivated writer :)

This week the poll was a real slam dunk, with a very clear winner! Welcome Greg!
